Robert Kerr
Robert Kerr holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from the North Carolina School of the Arts, and a Master of Music Degree from the University of Tulsa. In addition, he was awarded a scholarship to study composition in Scotland with Ronald Stevenson. As a freelance composer, Robert has written music for Universal Studios, NASA, the Walt Disney World Company, and Barney.
In 1999, Robert released an internationally distributed album “Portrait” with pianist Rick Silanskas, featuring Robert’s violin solos, and orchestrations. In May of ’99, he appeared as the violin soloist at “Hard Rock Live” Universal Studios, for a special concert recorded for television. Since that time, the television special has been seen in over 15 countries worldwide. In addition, he was a featured celebrity and soloist in the 68th annual Hollywood Christmas Parade, and has been seen by an estimated 41 million people live on Univision’s “Despierta America.”(Good Morning America.)
In 2001, Robert was commissioned to write a work for the Deanery Children’s Choir at St. Luke’s Episcopal Cathedral in Orlando. His “Prayer for Peace” has been sung there many times since its premiere and was chosen as the featured new work for the 2002 AGO convention. Hinshaw Music selected Robert’s “Prayer” for publication.
In 2002, Robert’s first Symphony, “Symphonic Celebration-Darkness, Hope, & Spirit” was commissioned by the Brevard Symphony Orchestra and premiered at the King Center in Melbourne, Florida honoring the Symphonies 49th season. The work was so well received, that again, in September 2003, another work by Robert entitled “American Journey” was chosen for the opening concert of the Orchestras 50th season.
In 2004, Robert completed his magnum opus, the “Concerto for Bass and Orchestra” which bass legend, Gary Karr wrote, “…We have just finished reading the 2nd movement and we were gob-smacked! This is the best concerto for bass I have ever seen…”
In February 2005, the Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra performed Robert’s popular work for solo fiddle and orchestra “Irish Legend.” Robert served as soloist for the performance. In 2005, Robert completed a companion work to the popular “Prayer for Peace” written for Ben Lane and the St. Luke’s children’s choirs entitled “Sing To The Lord A New Song.” This work was performed in Prague last summer on the Choir’s “Prayer for Peace Tour.” In April, Robert’s published a work entitled “Dreamer’s Farewell” was performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Robert is also a frequent soloist and clinician for Disney’s Magic Music Days. On April 18th, 2006, Robert performed at Epcot with the Strongsville, Ohio High School Orchestra as the Disney’s “Featured Performer” on his own arrangement of Orange Blossom Special.
On March 8th, 2008, Robert’s Bass Concerto was premiered in South Dakota with the Black Hills Symphony, featuring soloist Michael Hill. In June, 2008, The Florida Young Artists Orchestra premiered his “Ponce de Leon Suite” for full orchestra in Carnegie Hall to a standing ovation.
In 2010, his symphony entitled, “Legendary Florida: A Historical Portrait in Sound,” commissioned by the Museum of Florida Art, premiered at the Athens Theatre in Deland, FL. This performance involved 60 orchestra members, a 40 voice choir, and a multi-media presentation featuring the paintings of Jackson Walker.
In 2012, Flautist, teacher, orator, and activist, Donna Wissinger commissioned Robert to write The Florida Flute concerto. The work was written as an historical tribute to Florida’s rich history. It’s three movements focus on three historic Florida figures: Ponce de Leon, William Bartram, and Henry Flagler. The lush orchestration and narration add interest and perspective to this historical tribute.
In 2013, Robert became the drama and music coach for the Montessori School of East Orlando. Since that time, he has discovered a passion for writing, directing, set design, and music production, which has resulted in many original dramas, and full musicals:
2014 – Robert wrote a drama entitled “The Quest” celebrating the 500 year anniversary of the historic landing of Ponce de Leon in Florida.
2015 – Alhambra – A musical written by Robert’s mother, drama teacher, Mary Kerr 50 years prior, Robert revamped the script and score. This beautiful tale is from Washington Irving’s classic retelling of “Tales from the Alhambra”. The cast of MSEO performed the work to a sellout crowd for three performances in 2015!
2015 El Quitapesares “The Consolation” is a virtuosic flute fantasy, based on the famous Venezuelan Folk Song of the same title. Kerr’s joyful arrangement is scored for flute and Orchestra or Flute and Piano. It was commissioned by Flautist, Donna Wissinger.
2016 – Robert wrote his first full musical entitled, “A Forest Tale”. Inspired by Robert’s love of fantasy and fairy tale, Robert wrote this original and fanciful work for his students at the Montessori School of East Orlando.
2017 – Libertas Goddess of Freedom! This short drama is the true history of the building of the Statue of Liberty. Meet the whole cast of prominent figures that helped make this iconic monument to America.
2017 – Lady Liberty – A musical tribute to the statue of Liberty. Robert captures the spirit of what she means in this heartfelt song.
2017 – Robert’s second full musical entitled, “The Legend of Baracole: The Last Leprechaun”. This epic fantasy is an original story and musical by Robert Kerr. It premiered in 2018 at the Montessori School of East Orlando.
In 2017, Robert was commissioned by Donna Wissinger to write a symphony celebrating the life and work of Dr. Eugenie Clark. The Coral Reef Symphony is a through-composed, narrated symphony in 5 parts. It premiered by the South Florida Symphony Orchestra, under the leadership of Maestro Sebrina Maria Alfonso. The project was a collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Mote Marine Laboratory, and the Teaching Artists of Artz Out Loud.
2018 – The Dream of Emancipation – This short drama is about the contribution of Martin Luther King, and his life’s pursuit for freedom and equality for all people. The Montessori School of East Orlando premiered the play in 2018 to honor his legacy on the 50 year anniversary of his assassination on April 4th, 1968.
2018 – I Have A Dream – Robert was inspired to write a rap honoring Dr. Martin Luther King. The Children at the Montessori School of East Orlando, recorded and premiered the rap at their year end celebration, following their rendition of Robert’s play, “The Dream of Emancipation”.
2018 – The Witches Three – This is the third complete original musical by Robert Kerr. Premiered in 2018 by the MSEO Drama Program, the dark opening of this musical gives rise to two epic questions… Do Witches really exist?,… And if so… Do they eat children?!? The answers contained in this curious and comic fairytale delight, and surprise.
2019 – The Disney Legacy Award – Robert was honored by Walt Disney World, with this prestigious Award. This global prize Is Disney’s highest honor, and given to less than 1% of cast members around the world. Nominated by fellow colleagues, The Legacy Award represents Disney’s three Pillars of excellence – Dream, Create, Inspire. Robert is humbled, and proud to wear the blue name tag!
2020/21 – The pandemic put a halt to normal life for everyone. The world became hushed, and we all longed for normalcy to return. During this anxious and cloistered period, Robert, arranged and wrote feverishly for his favorite medium – the String Quartet. Drawing inspiration from beloved Disney musicals and movies, Robert spent long hours with the idea of marrying beloved and popular Disney tunes with the virtuosic demands of a classical technique. The result brought Robert’s catalog of Disney and popular arrangements to over 100!
2022 – PBS World Broadcast of “An Ozark Mountain Symphony” – Robert was given the honor of performing as soloist for this PBS Special, at the famous Mansion Theater in Branson, Missouri. Robert opened the show, entitled “An Ozark Mountain Symphony: A Musical Celebration” with an electrifying bravura cadenza for violin and orchestra based on Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra” which morphed into a Bluegrass Odyssey that brought the audience to their feet! The hour long special featured stars from Broadway and the Country Music Hall of Fame including: Stephanie Leigh (Mary Poppins); Michael Cavenaugh (Moving Out); the cast from the London production of The Simon & Garfunkel Story; country singer Jimmy Fortune, and The Wilhites gospel music.
